Abstract The microstructures, phase formation and distributions in fast- solidified Al70Ni20Ru10 alloy balls were characterized by focused ion beam (foFIB), scanning electron microscopy ( SEM) and transmission electron microscopy ( TEM) techniques. The results show that the non-equilibrium solidification structures formed in the alloy balls are highly complex, but they can be roughly divided into four types according to their solidification morphologies and composition. A kind of two-dimensional decagonal quasicrystals with a period of 0.4 nm discovered, which wasformed in the specific solidification region with a dendrite structural feature. The arrangement of small atom clusters, is quite different from that of previously-reported Al-Ni-Ru decahedral quasicrystals with the same periodicity.
